Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable medication that temporarily paralyzes your muscles for medicinal or aesthetic reasons. Most people are familiar with Botox’s unique ability to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, making you look younger and revitalized. Botox can also be used to treat:
- Urinary incontinence
- Crossed eyes
- Lazy eyes
- Muscle spasms
There’s a reason why Botox is the most popular cosmetic treatment on the market today: It’s very effective, and its results are noticeable after just 24-72 hours. Plus, the treatment is a safe alternative to risky and expensive cosmetic surgeries, and the results are conveniently temporary.
How does Botox work?
The main ingredient in Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport®, similar injectables, is a poisonous substance that occurs in nature. When it’s injected in very small amounts, it temporarily stops your muscles from accepting the nerve signals that tell them to move.
Wrinkles are caused by continued muscle contractions over time. You form your unique set of wrinkles based on the movements you make the most.
For example, if you smile a lot, you probably have prominent smile lines on the sides of your mouth. With Botox, the muscles that cause your wrinkles are forced to relax, so your skin becomes smoother.
What are the side effects of Botox injections?
Botox injections typically come with few or no side effects, but as with every kind of medication, some side effects can occur. Some common side effects are:
- Pain or soreness
- Muscle weakness
- Double vision
- Dry mouth
If your side effects don’t go away within a few days or if they seem severe, call the clinic at your earliest convenience.
Am I a candidate for Botox?
Botox is a minimally invasive treatment, making it suitable for a wider range of patients. Generally, you must be in good health and be sure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients in Botox.
Dr. Capaldi may also decide that you’re a good candidate if:
- You don’t have nerve diseases or conditions
- You’re not pregnant or nursing
- Your expectations are realistic
- You’re at least 18 years old
If you’re not a candidate, or if you’re just curious, Dr. Capaldi can help you explore other options for wrinkle reduction. At Diamante Medical Skin Care, he also offers Xeomin and Dysport®, two alternative wrinkle-reducing injections.
